Theories of Modus Vivendi

A modus vivendi is basically a set of arrangements that are accepted as basis for conducting affairs by those who are party to them, although they are not the arrangements that any party would most prefer. Establishing a modus vivendi involves trying to reduce the potentially destructive effects that disagreement and conflict would otherwise have. The idea of modus vivendi has been, in recent years, defended as realist approach to politics against the so-called ideal accounts of it. The claim is that political theories tell us little about how the real world can and should work. This conference is devoted to assessing both the merits and problems with a political theory of modus vivendi; considering its limitations and the challenges it has to confront, and exploring its possible relationship to other political scenarios.
